Connectivity Dependence

“A computer terminal is not some clunky old television with a typewriter in front of it.  It is an interface where the mind and body can connect withthe universe and move bits of it around.”  – Douglas Adams

For a 24 hour period today I will be in an area with very poor Internet connectivity.  This isn’t backpacking in the Andes, it’s downtown Tacoma, WA. This is in no way a condemnation of Tacoma, but a reminder that even in the urban environments we often have “dead zones” that we have to deal with.

The interesting part of this for me is how this has affected my daily business processes. I am addicted to working “on the fly” primarily through my iPhone, and occasionally with my laptop.  All of this has come to a screeching halt with my Outbox containing several emails that normally would have made it to someone else’s Inbox.  This delay in my standard process flow is enlightening.  Catching up on the news, and following my favorite ‘blogs didn’t happen today.  I will survive thank you, but this first hand reminder is heartily accepted and moves to the forefront in consideration as I design systems in the future.

As a side note, last night I read a book. Another welcome activity that had dwindled with my “work on the fly” operating mode.  Sometimes “work on the fly” translates to “always working”.
